The St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church was first organized in 1906, making it the second oldest Black congregation in Miami. Although the Miami area is celebrated for its Art Deco architecture, St. John’s Baptist Church is one of the only Art Deco style religious buildings in Miami-Dade County. The building was designed by the first Black-owned architecture firm in the United States, Mckissack & McKissack. The church building began construction in 1939, under the leadership of J.W. Drake.
St. John’s Baptist Church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
