Theodore R. and Thelma A. Gibson Charter School was founded by Mrs. Thelma Gibson in honor of her late husband, Reverend Theodore Gibson. Reverend Gibson was a civil rights activist and president of the Miami chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. from 1954 to 1964. He was the third African American to serve on the Miami City Commission (1972 – 1981). He pushed for quality of life improvements there – including the passage of ordinances requiring running water, flushing toilets, and septic tanks, as well as the creation of a health clinic and day-care center.
